CHAPTER THIRTEEN

REPORTER: What do you consider the current hot spots in the civil war, Mr. Lewis?

LEWIS: Well, Tom, without a doubt, I’d say they are Cavanaugh II, Dalkeith, Giausar, and Marlette, where the fighting currently involves at least three regiments each. Success for either side will permit the reassignment of units to other hot spots, creating a domino effect for whichever side can exploit it. Cumbres would have been on the list, except that the Twentieth and Twenty-third Arcturan Guards recently subdued the Third Donegal Guards. Unfortunately, they lost their sister regiment, the Twenty-fifth Arcturan Guards, in the process.

REPORTER: I notice that your list does not include New Syrtis.

LEWIS: That’s because the fighting on New Syrtis is in a class unto itself—a nova-hot spot, if you will. Not only is it by far the largest conflict currently underway anywhere in the Alliance or the Federated Sims, it is the single most important world being contested. A win in either direction will be devastating to the other side, not to mention the boost and loss of morale. Like it or not, New Syrtis has become the current proxy world for New Avalon. Of course, the fact that Duke Hasek seems to have some additional, personal agenda only makes the outcome more critical. I think we’re looking at a long and bitter fight for the capital of the Capellan March.
